SABC will not broadcast the Caf Champions League Final.
SABC has announced that they will not broadcast the Caf Champions League Final between Kaizer Chiefs and Al Ahly.
This much-anticipated match will kick off on Saturday, 17 July 2021, at 9 pm in the Stade Mohammed stadium in Morocco.
According to the statement released by SABC, Caf has sold the exclusive rights to the pay-TV broadcaster SuperSport. SABC said in their negotiation with the Caf management, they reached out to all their requirements.
"Despite the SABC meeting CAF’s asking price for the free-to-air rights, the offer was rejected on the basis that CAF has signed an exclusive deal with Supersport that covers all rights, including the free-to-air rights, for this match. The agreement between CAF and Supersport is wrong as it places this showpiece of African club football behind a paywall, effectively denying millions of South African football fans the opportunity to watch the game." the statement said.
The SABC management said when they tried to approach ICASA, they also did not help them out.
"The failure of ICASA’s Sports Rights regulations to deal with this situation means the public broadcaster has no recourse to the regulator even though broadcasting the CAF Champions League Final – involving one of South Africa’s biggest clubs – is clearly part of SABC’s public mandate." the statement said.
Kaizer Chief will be playing their first Champions League Final since its establishment in 1970.
